Green Initiatives

At The Westin Trillium House, Blue Mountain, we are proud of our commitment to the environment and the green initiatives that participate in. We invite you to learn more about the steps that we are taking to positively impact the environment.


  • We give our guests the option to participate in Make a Green Choice, which encourages guests to reduce water, chlorine and detergent use by re-using linen and towels during their overnight stay
  • Installed Building Automation System to ensure all meeting rooms and public areas are timed off when not in use
  • All toilets and showerheads are low flow
  • Occupancy sensor lighting controls have been installed on all washrooms and vending areas
  • Exterior signage is set on timers and the main exterior lighting in the driveway are energy efficient
  • Replaced all exit signs with energy efficient LED’s (over 200)
  • Installed timers on health club sauna heaters
  • Replaced incandescent table lamps in common areas to compact fluorescents
  • Installed energy efficient gas heaters for the pool and hot tub
  • Participate annually in Starwood's Carbon Disclosure Project survey


  • Comprehensive recycling and composting program in place (paper, plastic, glass, aluminum, cardboard, organic waste) in both front and back of house
  • Hazardous waste/products are disposed of separately on a regular basis (batteries, IT equipment, paint, CFL’s)
  • Minimize number of supply deliveries to reduce carbon emissions associated with deliveries
  • Fryer oil is recycled by a third party which is converted in bio-diesel fuel
  • Our Chefs observe responsible food planning and purchasing practices to reduce waste and spoilage
  • Boxed lunches and bags are compostable or recyclable
  • We no longer serve bottled water at banquet water stations instead we offer water jugs of fresh filtered water. This has eliminated 250 000 1.5L bottles from the landfill annually
  • A “Leave Nothing Behind” Policy is in place/communicated to conference exhibitors
  • In our banquet department, pads, pens, water and mints are set at a station instead of at each setting to reduce waste and consumption
  • Used room amenities and uniforms are donated to a local shelter
  • Used soap from guest rooms is recycled by a third party
  • Eliminated the use of Styrofoam and converted to re-usable/compostable alternatives
  • Photocopiers are defaulted to print double-sided
  • Guest rooms do not have phone books

Our smoke free policy is based on feedback from our guests, industry research and customer data

  • Low-emitting materials, adhesive, sealants, paints, coatings, and carpet systems


  • Sustainability Council established with aggressive goals to decrease energy and water consumption by 30% and 20%, respectively by the year 2020
  • Communication Board installed to share progress, new initiatives and projects to hotel associates
  • Monthly tracking of energy and water consumption along with waste diversion rates
  • Socially Conscious Meeting Programs and local community group references are available
